Cardio vs. Strength Training: Which Is Better for You?

It’s one of the most common questions I get, and the honest answer is: you need both. Cardio and strength training do different jobs, and the right balance depends on your goal. Here’s how I explain it to clients.

What cardio does best

  • Strengthens your heart and lungs and improves endurance.
  • Burns calories during the session, which supports a fat-loss deficit.
  • Helps you recover between sets and feel better day to day.

What strength training does best

  • Builds and maintains muscle — which shapes your body and supports your metabolism.
  • Makes everyday life easier: carrying groceries, climbing stairs, picking up your kids.
  • Strengthens bones and joints and is a big part of injury prevention.

Which matters more for your goal?

Fat loss

Strength training is the foundation — it helps you keep muscle while you lose fat, so the weight that comes off is mostly fat. Cardio and daily steps then help increase your calorie burn. Nutrition ties it all together.

Building muscle

Prioritize lifting with progressive overload (gradually adding weight or reps). Keep cardio light to moderate so it supports recovery instead of competing with it.

General health and fitness

A balanced mix of both, plus mobility work, is ideal for feeling strong and energetic.

A simple weekly plan that combines both

  • 3 strength days (full body or upper/lower), 45–60 minutes.
  • 2–3 cardio sessions: mostly steady (walking, cycling, rowing), with up to one interval session like Tabata.
  • Daily movement: aim for a consistent step count — see my post on walking 10,000 steps.
  • 1–2 rest or recovery days, with good sleep.

Doing both on the same day? Lift first, then do your cardio. For specific options, check out the best cardio exercises for weight loss.
